"31-Knots Burke"

"Thirty-one knot Burke, get athwart the Buk-a-Rabaul evaluation line....If enemy contacted, you know what to do."
(William F Halsey: Message to Captain Arleigh Burke, USN, 24 November, 1943) {This was the origin of the nickname, "31-Knot" Burke, based on the fact that, though his destroyer squadron could in theory only make 30 knots, his speed of advance toward the enemy on this occasion was 31 knots.} Captain Burke was the Squadron Commander of Destroyer Squadron 23 "The Little Beavers" at the time. FltAdm. Halsey was the Commander 3rd Fleet when he issued the order.

The American's Creed
by William Tyler Page

I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.
I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

Written in 1917, accepted by the United States House of Representatives on April 3, 1918
